QPSR - Driver Experiences

Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill of driving a steam train? Maybe you know a train enthusiast that would?

The Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway is now able to offer the chance to drive (and fire) our PB15 steam engine or our 1600 class diesel electric locomotive.

This is an experience that will never be forgotten!

On each day there will be 2 participants accompanied by a qualified driver and fireman. There will be 6 trips over a 4km section of our branch line - each person will have 3 round trips each of firing and driving, covering a total distance of approximately 50km!

You will be given an initial safety briefing before assisting with lighting the fire and oiling/greasing the locomotive. While the engine is raising steam, your crew will explain to you the various aspects of firing and driving a steam train.

While firing, you will be given instruction in:

Firing techniques
Monitoring and maintaining the water level in the boiler
Monitoring and maintaining steam pressure

While driving, you will be given instruction in the use of:

Regulator
Reverser
Westinghouse brake system
Whistle

At the start of the day, you will be given a drivers cap to wear on the day and then keep as a souvenir.

At the end of the day, you will be presented with a certificate to commemorate your experience!

Cost:

Steam Driver Experience is $499 per person (including GST)
Diesel Driver Experience is $299 per person (including GST)

Terms & Conditions:

Minimum age is 18 (or 16 when accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.)
The Driver Experience may be terminated by the supervising Driver if the driver is concerned about safety or if it becomes apparant that the participant is unsuitable for any reason.
